When winter hits Northwestern Ontario, your fence faces months of snow, ice, and freezing temperatures. Whether it’s wood, vinyl, chain link, or composite, every fence needs a bit of attention to survive the season in top shape.
At Northwest Fencing, we know how harsh winters can be — and how a few smart maintenance steps can make your fence last for decades. Here are some easy, effective ways to care for your fence this winter.
Snow piles may seem harmless, but when they sit against your fence, the moisture and weight can cause damage over time.
Tip: After each major snowfall, clear snow buildup away from fence lines — especially around posts and panels.
Freezing rain and melting snow can lead to ice accumulation. Ice adds extra weight and pressure, particularly on chain link and vinyl fences, potentially bending or cracking them.
Tip: Gently remove ice buildup using a broom instead of forceful tools that can damage the fence surface.
As the ground freezes and thaws, it expands and contracts — a process known as frost heaving. This movement can shift or tilt your fence posts, leading to instability.
Tip: Walk along your fence line and check for any movement. If you spot leaning posts, contact a professional for realignment before the ground freezes solid.
Wood fences absorb moisture during winter, making them vulnerable to warping, cracking, or rot.
Tip: Apply a weatherproof sealant before the cold sets in, and clear snow from the base to reduce moisture contact.
High winds and temperature swings can loosen tension wires, ties, and fittings.
Tip: Make a quick visual inspection of your chain link fence for sagging mesh or missing hardware — these small fixes prevent bigger issues later.
Don’t wait for warmer weather to fix small problems. Cracks, leaning posts, or broken gates are easier (and often cheaper) to handle when caught early.
Tip: Northwest Fencing offers winter repair services for all fence types — so your fence stays strong when spring arrives.
