Vinyl or plastic fencing are a more contemporary look.
They are made up of an environmentally safe Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) plastic. Panels are available in an assortment of colours and styles to match most exteriors. They come in a glossy, non-porous finish which is helpful for cleaning and possibly graffiti removal. Northwesting also offers a Woodland Select line of wood-looking vinyl.
Wooden fences are the classic, all-natural, fencing material. Many prefer it simply because it is not a synthetic material, created in a factory.
Advantages and Disadvantages
1. Vinyl Fence Cost vs Wood
As previously mentioned upfront cost for wood is lower, it is more affordable to install and easier to replace or repair. However, an initial vinyl investment makes sense if in need of a lower maintenance option. Wood is vulnerable to pests, fungus, rot, as well any staining or paint will require at least yearly maintenance, not to mention boards may warp due moisture or temperature changes.
Vinyl fencing, is very low maintenace given its plastic nature of course. Cleaning is easily achievable with a little spray, it will not suffer from dry rot, pest, or fungus damage, nor does it crack or split and is fire resistant.
2. Installation & Repair Process
Vinyl fence panels come ready to install, and this process is simple too – Rails are slid into posts, and the posts are then secured into the ground. Wood fences are trickier to install, and if not done properly will sink deeper into the ground, which can lead to fence deformations later on.
In the event of repair, replacing wood fence panels is far simpler and considerably inexpensive. Proper vinyl fence repairs may require the replacement of entire sections.
Plastic fencing, is resistant to harsh weather conditions like high winds, temperature drops/spikes as well as mildew.
If selecting wood consider a type is resistant to rot and decay as well as structurall strong. Redwood and Cedar are recommeded. Also, prepared to invest in a pressure and chemical treatments as well as preservative sealants.
4. Fence Residual Value
Keep in mind also that, vinyl in terms of residual value is a better investment than a well-maintained wooden fence. This is taking into consideration time, money and expended energy on labour. On the other hand, choosing not to maintain either fence types will hurt property value and curb appeal in the long run by the thousands.
Before selecting a fencing style a few considerations:
